Shropshire clinical commissioners appoints new Clinical Chair
The appointment of a new chair signals a change of leadership for Shropshire’s NHS clinical commissioners.
Dr Julian Povey has become the new Clinical Chair of Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) It is the first time since the CCG became authorised in 2013 that the post has been held by a GP, and follows a decision taken by the CCG’s membership which comprises all 44 GP practices in Shropshire.
Dr Povey has been a GP in Shropshire since 1994, and has been a partner at the Pontesbury Medical Practice since 1997. He was involved with the former Shropshire PCT from 2009, and the CCG from the early development stages in 2010.
He said: “We need to recognise the CCG is in the middle of a period of transition. However, what has been remarkable to see has been that the drive, dedication and work ethic of everyone in the organisation has not diminished and that we remain totally committed to providing safe, high quality and effective care for our patients, speaking to patients in our communities and ensuring that the CCG is in-touch with our GP members across Shropshire. One of our priorities is to increase clinical involvement in some key areas of work, including planned and urgent care.
“We will also be looking to appoint new GP board members and a locality lead for Shrewsbury.
“I see the new role I have been appointed to as providing clinical leadership, both within the CCG and in our relationship with our NHS and other partners, and to provide clinical advice and support to the CCG on a day-to-day basis.”
Dr Povey replaces Helen Herrity who has been Lay Chair since the CCG was authorised in 2013. Helen will remain with the CCG continuing her role as Lay Member for Patient and Public Engagement.
She said: “The membership of the CCG have made it clear they now wish to have a GP as Chair and a managerial Accountable Officer. This is the model followed by most other CCGs in the country and is something I fully support. I would like to thank everyone for their support during my time as Lay Chair and wish Julian the best for his time as Clinical Chair.”
Dr Povey added: “I would like to thank Helen for her all her work and commitment over the years, both with the CCG and the Primary Care Trust previously. I am delighted we are retaining her skills and that she has agreed to remain as Lay Board Member ensuring that we continue to represent the best interests of patients and consider their views.”
Brigid Stacey remains the CCG’s Acting Accountable Officer, although the process of recruiting to the post on a permanent basis has begun.
