More car washes are being held around Shropshire this weekend after a car cleaning spree by firefighters raised hundreds of pounds for charity.

More charity car washes to be held by Shropshire firefighters this weekend

Off duty fire crews spruced up hundreds of cars in Bridgnorth, Church Stretton and Whitchurch last weekend armed with hoses, buckets and sponges.

A total of nine county fire stations are offering the car cleaning service in exchange for a charity donation in aid of the national Fire Fighters Charity.

“Both Bridgnorth and Church Stretton firefighters washed more than 150 vehicles at each of their events, along with Whitchurch also being very well supported by the local community,” said organiser Ashley Brown, Fire Fighter Charity Service Co-ordinator.

“It’s a great start to the car wash period, which hopefully will carry on with further washes this weekend at Prees, Newport, Shrewsbury and Clun fire stations.

“We are hopeful that the support and generosity of the public continues and it will top what we collected last year.

Shropshire firefighters hope to raise as much money as possible for the charity which gives respite, recuperation and rehabilitation to sick or injured firefighters and their families.

Firefighters will also give out important fire safety advice to visitors during the car wash.

Last year more than £278,000 was raised through car wash events by UK firefighters with more than £4,000 from Shropshire.

Shrewsbury fire station is holding its event on Saturday, March 19 from 10am to 3pm while firefighters at Prees will wash cars from 9am to 2pm. Minsterley fire station’s event is on March 26 from 9am to 2pm and Wellington is holding its car wash event at the Red Lion pub on the A5 from 9am to 1pm on Saturday, April 2.

The Fire Fighters Charity needs more than £8 million to run national centres around the country. The charity, set up in 1943 to help wounded firefighters and support their families during Word War 2, is entirely self funding and relies on the goodwill and generosity of donations from members of the public.

The services which the charity offer are open to all serving operational fire fighters, Fire Control, support staff as well as those who are retired.
