Firefighters raised a “sparkling” £3,000 for charity with a series of car washes across Shropshire.

Shropshire firefighters raise £3,000 with charity car washes

Off duty fire crews hosed, soaped and shined hundreds of cars at eight county fire stations over the past few weeks receiving donations for their cleaning service.

Charity Service Co-ordinator Ashley Brown congratulated county motorists for their generosity.

“Once again the car washes have raised a fantastic amount of money for the Fire Fighters Charity.

“Shropshire firefighters raised £3,111 which is an increase of more than £1,000 on the last event in September 2015.

“We are extremely grateful for their generosity and overwhelmed by the continued support of our local communities around the county.”

Topping the donation table were fire stations in south Shropshire with Bridgnorth collecting £666, Church Stretton £794 and Clun £880.

“Special thanks to those firefighters and to everyone who gave up their time and washed cars for charity,“ added Ashley.

Car washes were also held in Whitchurch, Prees, Newport, Minsterley and Shrewsbury fire stations. Firefighters also gave out important fire safety advice during the car wash events.

Last year more than £278,000 was raised through car washes by UK firefighters with more than £4,000 from two separate events in Shropshire.

The Fire Fighters Charity gives respite, recuperation and rehabilitation to sick or injured firefighters and their families.

The charity needs more than £8 million to run national centres around the country. Set up in 1943 to help wounded firefighters and support their families during Word War 2, it is entirely self funding and relies on the goodwill and generosity of donations from members of the public.

The services, which the charity offers, are open to all serving operational fire fighters, Fire Control, support staff as well as those who are retired.
