An appeal for witnesses has been launched after a 26-year-old woman was attacked in Newport yesterday.

Woman suffers injuries in Newport attack

The woman was walking home alone on Hawkstone Avenue was attacked by one male who was a member of a larger group as she passed through an alleyway leading from nearby Sandiford Crescent.

The attack happened at approximately 3.30am as the victim made her way home from a night out in the town.

The investigating officer PC Walker-Shale from Telford police station said “Despite being very frightened by the sudden and unprovoked attack, the victim has been able to provide ourselves with quite a good description of her attacker, and also other persons present.

“The victim has suffered thankfully only minor injuries during the attack even though she has been cut several times to the side of her body and her face with some kind of sharp implement after bravely punching her attacker in the face.

“I would ask anyone who saw a group of four or five males in dark clothing and hooded tops or heard a commotion taking place around the Sandiford Crescent or Hawkstone Avenue areas of Newport between 3.15am and 4am to get in touch with myself at Telford police station.

She added “I would also appeal to those involved to hand themselves in to police now before we go knocking on their doors."

Anyone with information should contact Telford Police on 101 quoting reference 371S of April 17.

Alternatively, details can be passed free and anonymously via the CrimeStoppers charity on 0800 555111.
