Police investigate assault in Telford after man found unconscious

Updated

Detectives are currently investigating an assault that occurred in the Oakengates area of Telford.

To aid the investigation, a large area of Oakengates is cordoned off after police were alerted to a young man unconscious on Lion Street at around 7.45 this morning,

The man, believed to be in his twenties, was found with significant injures to his face and body following a suspected physical assault.

He has been taken to Royal Shrewsbury hospital where he remains in a stable condition with a suspected broken nose.

Det. Sgt Ian Rutherford, leading the investigation said: "We are working to ascertain what happened this morning. We are reviewing CCTV from the area and would ask anyone who witnessed the incident and has not spoken to police already, to please come forward. I would also like to thank the members of the public who stopped to help the man."

Officers are particularly keen to speak to two men who stopped to help the man but left the scene before officers could take their details. It is thought they could have important information.

While officers investigate, Lion Street has been closed to both vehicles and pedestrians.

If you can help with our investigation please call 101 quoting incident number 125s of Saturday 30 April.

If you want to give information but don't want to give your name you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or use their anonymous online form.
