Following an overwhelming vote in favour of the Waters Upton Neighbourhood Plan in a referendum in May, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet is to approve the next stage of the process.

Waters Upton Neighbourhood Plan to be ‘made’

The report, to be presented at the meeting of the Cabinet on 16 June, recommends that the Council now ‘makes’ the Waters Upton Neighbourhood Plan.

This will mean that the policies in the Waters Upton Neighbourhood Plan will become part of the Development Plan for Telford & Wrekin and will be considered in the determination of planning applications in the Neighbourhood Plan area alongside national and borough wide planning policy.

The Waters Upton Neighbourhood Plan referendum was held on 5 May 2016. The result was 86 per cent of valid votes in favour and 14 per cent against.

This is the second Neighbourhood Plan in Telford & Wrekin to reach the end of the process and become part of the Development Plan. It provides a model for the other Town & Parish Councils (Ercall Magna Parish Council, Newport Town Council, Lilleshall and Stirchley & Brookside Parish Council) who are currently at different stages of developing their Neighbourhood Plans.

Councillor Richard Overton, cabinet member for Housing, Leisure and Health, said: “Waters Upton has shown that they are overwhelmingly in favour of the implementation of the Neighbourhood Plan by voting six-to-one in the recent referendum.

“This will now pave the way for other parish and town council areas to move forward with their Neighbourhood Plans to be incorporated into the wider Development Plan for Telford & Wrekin.”

The report will be considered by the Cabinet at its meeting on Thursday 16 June.
