Two occupants of a car have died following a collision with a lorry on the A49 south of Shrewsbury this morning.

Two dead following crash between car and tanker on A49 south of Shrewsbury

The collision happened just before 10.50am between Shrewsbury and Dorrington.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Crews arrived to find a car that had suffered significant damage in the collision with a man and woman inside, both in cardiac arrest.

“Bystanders were already carrying out CPR which ambulance staff took over.

“However, despite the best efforts of everyone concerned, it sadly became apparent that nothing could be done to save either patient and they were confirmed dead at the scene.

“The driver of the lorry, a man, was treated for the effects of shock and discharged at scene.”

The A49 is closed both ways between Church Stretton and Shrewsbury and is expected to remain closed until later this evening. Highways England are managing road closures.

If anyone witnessed the incident this morning and has not yet spoken to police, they are asked to call West Mercia Police on 101 quoting incident number 0216S of 1 July 2016.
