Two former Shropshire Methodist churches to go under the hammer
Two former Methodist churches in Shropshire villages are set to go under the hammer at a collective property auction in Shrewsbury later this month.

Edgerley and Melverley Methodist Churches, both near Oswestry, have been entered in auctioneers Halls’ nine-lot auction at the company’s Battlefield headquarters on July 29. Both churches have great potential for a variety of alternative usages, subject to planning consent.
Auctioneer Allen Gittins, a director of Halls, anticipates keen interest in both churches. “Former churches in village locations always seem to capture the imagination in Shropshire and the Marches and both these properties have interesting original features, which add to their charm,” he said.
Edgerley Methodist Chapel, which as a guide price of £5,000 to £10,000, is situated just outside the hamlet of Pentre, close to the village of Kinnerley and within 11 miles of both Shrewsbury and Oswestry.
Constructed as a primitive Methodist Church (Jubilee Chapel) in 1860, the building was extended in around 1920 and the 1960s. It retains numerous original features, including timber panelled walls, a raised timber seating area/stage to front and windows with part stained glass work.
The accommodation comprises an entrance lobby, kitchen and main church. Outside, there is a grassed area with wrought iron railings bordering the council maintained road.
Dating to 1865, Melverley Methodist Church has a guide price of £15,000 to £20,000. Attractively situated in the centre of the rural hamlet of Melverley, the former church has many interesting internal features, including a vaulted ceiling with possibly enough height for a second floor, arched metal windows and a raised altar area.
“There is great scope to adapt and convert the property to a dwelling, studio, offices or showroom, subject to planning consent,” said Mr Gittins.
