A major fire and rescue training exercise took place at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) at the weekend when firefighters tested their skills in part of the former maternity building.

The Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service used sections of the building to carry out realistic rescues using breathing apparatus and search and rescue techniques.

Fire officers also tested their communication, casualty handling and incident command procedures during the training event on Saturday morning.

A total of 20 firefighters from Shrewsbury and Telford and four fire appliances were at the scene.

Crew Manager Alex Howell, of Shrewsbury’s Green Watch, thanked hospital staff for allowing them to use part of the hospital for their fire drills.

He said: “It is always difficult to find realistic buildings where we can train so the hospital building was perfect. We are very grateful for the opportunity.”

Steve Lewis, Estates Site Manager at RSH, said: “We were more than happy to help Shropshire firefighters in their training exercise and provide them with a realistic environment to train in.

“Going forward I would like to extend this partnership as it not only benefits the fire service but is also good for us for them to develop a good understanding of our buildings should anything ever happen in the future.”
