The A49 south of Church Stretton is closed for resurfacing this morning following a lorry fire overnight.

A49 south of Church Stretton closed for resurfacing following lorry fire

The road is closed between the B4370 at Marshbrook and the A489 Grove Junction at Wistanstow.

Around 30m of the carriageway on the southbound side needs resurfacing following the lorry fire in the early hours of this morning.

A Highways England spokesperson said: "Before work can start, a complex recovery of the vehicle must take place, and that is now underway. Both sides of the carriageway need to be closed so work can be carried out safely.

"Highways England and its contractors are working hard to reopen the carriageway as soon as it is safe to do so."

Firefighters from Church Stretton and Craven Arms were called to the lorry fire at 11.46pm last night.

The fire involved a line painting lorry carrying six propane gas cylinders, and a quantity of oil and diesel.

Firefighters used two hose reel jets with foam and two breathing apparatus to tackle the fire.
