New Non-Executive Director appointed at acute hospital trust

NHS Improvement has confirmed the appointment of Paul Cronin as a Non-Executive Director of The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH).

Paul, who lives in Stanwardine in North Shropshire, has been the Chief Executive of Severn Hospice, a local charity that provides palliative and end-of-life care for adults in Telford and Wrekin, Shropshire, north Powys and Ceredigion since 2003.

Paul, who had been Designate Non-Executive Director at SaTH since 10 November 2015, started his career in the NHS with Shropshire Health Authority 32 years ago and has held a variety of roles, including Chief Executive posts at the Cardiothoracic Centre - Liverpool NHS Trust, Wirral Health Authority and North Cheshire Hospitals.

While with Severn Hospice, Paul has led the development of Compassionate Communities across Shropshire and is passionate about citizens and organisations working together in partnership to provide support to the most frail and vulnerable in our communities.

Mr Cronin said: “I feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to listen to our patients and support our staff in what is an important time for healthcare in Shropshire. I’ve really enjoyed my time with SaTH so far and look forward to being involved with the organisation for at least the next four years.”

Professor Peter Latchford, Chair of The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, said: “Paul has provided some really invaluable contributions to our Board discussions since joining as a Designate Non-Executive Director.

“I’m delighted he has now joined us as a Non-Executive Director and look forward to him helping to take the organisation forward at a pivotal time for healthcare.”

The appointment was made by NHS Improvement, which is responsible for appointing all chairs and non-executives to NHS trusts throughout England.

All appointments are subject to the Code of Practice of the Commissioner for Public Appointments, and made following an open competition based on merit, in a way that is open, transparent and fair to all applicants.

Mr Cronin’s term of office as a Non-Executive Director will run from 22 August 2016 until 21 August 2020 and he is entitled to receive remuneration of £6,157 per annum for which he is expected to devote 2.5 days per month to his duties as Non-Executive Director. He has declared no political activity in the last five years and has no other Ministerial appointments.

A Designate Non-Executive Director does not have any voting rights on the Board but can contribute to discussions. A Non-Executive Director has voting rights.
