New housing suits Whitchurch to a tee

Popular Whitchurch man Albert Minshall has proudly unveiled the name of a new street in the town as part of a development of 10 affordable homes built by The Wrekin Housing Trust.

New housing suits Whitchurch to a tee

The street has been named Minshall Court after Mr Minshall, who is the founder of Hill Valley Golf course.

On cutting the ribbon Mr Minshall, who is in his 80s said; “I’m delighted to have this street named after me. I started out as a brick layer at just 14 and had been asked previously, when I was in my twenties but felt it was too early. It’s now the perfect time in my life to be recognised by the town.”

The new homes consist of six houses and four apartments with parking and private entrances and have been the culmination of partnership working between The Wrekin Housing Trust and developer Saxonby, the landowner and Shropshire Council. The land was owned by Shropshire Council and Mercian Developments and the Trust worked with Saxonby to achieve the planning permission and create the development.

Neighbours and local residents have been extremely positive about the homes which are opposite Tesco and near to the town centre and railway station.

David Williams, Housing Services Executive for The Wrekin Housing Trust, said: “We are really pleased to provide affordable homes for the people of Whitchurch. These homes are in a great location and they have all have been let to people with a connection to the town.”

James Wood, Co-founder of Saxonby, said: “These homes are a great example of partnership working. We have transformed a piece of land previously overgrown and unused and it’s lovely to see the development named after a popular Whitchurch man.”

Cllr John Sinnott from Whitchurch Town Council suggested the name of the new development and said; “The Shropshire policy for naming roads reads “To honour and commemorate noteworthy persons associated with the local area, or Shropshire as a whole” and how better that we honour someone rather than commemorate them. Albert Minshall, does a lot for the people of Whitchurch; he is well respected in the town and really deserves the honour.”
