Police appeal for witnesses after woman is raped in Newport pub

The incident happened at the The New Inn, Stafford Road, Newport at around 11pm on Sunday (27th May).

Specially trained officers are providing the victim with support.

Police would like to hear from anybody who may have seen a man described as white, around 5'8", stubble beard, green eyes, slicked back hair that was swept to the right.

The man is described as being quite well maintained of average build with fairly tanned skin, but gaunt in appearance. He was wearing denim blue jeans and a bright green pin striped shirt.

Officers investigating the incident are also appealing for anyone who was in the premises who may have taken photos of anyone else there that evening to get in touch.

Local policing commander Superintendent Tom Harding said: "This was clearly a distressing incident for the victim and we have specially trained officers providing her support at this time.

"We understand the concern incidents such as this cause and are carrying out extensive enquiries to trace the person responsible, at the current time we are treating this as an isolated incident.

"We're keen to speak to anyone who was in the pub on Sunday night or was out in Newport. The offender was wearing quite a distinctive shirt and it may be someone remembers seeing someone or knows who he is.

"We'd also ask people to check any photographs they took to see if they caught anyone in the background wearing a similar shirt.

"We will have local officers on patrol in the town to offer reassurance to anyone who is concerned."

If you have any information that you think may help please contact the police on 101 quoting incident number 005S of 28 May or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
