A collapsed historic culvert which is blocking a road in the centre of Church Aston could take up to four weeks to repair.

Collapsed historic culvert in Church Aston could take weeks to repair

Telford & Wrekin Council’s Highways team is carrying out further surveys at The Dale this week to try and establish the extent of the culvert, which is thought to be more than 150 years old and does not appear on any maps.

These investigations will establish the nature of the repair that needs to be carried out. The collapse happened overnight on Tuesday October 2 and resulted in a large hole appearing in the carriageway, making the road impassable.

Dom Proud, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Highways spokesman, said: “This is a complex site, given the location and the proximity of an underground gas main so it is going to need careful management and design in order to effect a repair.

“We are carrying out surveys to assess the extent of the culvert and also to see if there is any additional access to it so we can do camera surveys.

“We are also looking into the possibility of involving specialist contractors to help progress the design solution.

“We are expecting this repair to take at least four weeks but it could well be longer depending on what progress we make with designing a fix.”

Councillor Hilda Rhodes, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Transport, said: “We understand that this will cause inconvenience to residents in Church Aston, particularly those who use buses.

“However it is a major job and a challenging one to repair so I would like to thank residents for their patience while the road is closed. We will try and get it open again as soon as we can but it is obviously important that we effect a long term repair.”
