Woman dies and four injured in serious collision on A49 in Shrewsbury

The collision involved a grey Nissan Leaf and a black Peugeot 5008 and happened on the A49 between the Sundorne and Preston Island in Shrewsbury at around 4.30pm.

Police say the driver of the Nissan Leaf car was travelling from Preston to Sundorne and the Peugeot was travelling in the opposite direction when they were in collision.

The driver of the Nissan died at the scene and four others were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Three Midlands Air Ambulances from Cosford, Tatenhill and Strensham attended, along with four land ambulance crews and three paramedic officers.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “When crews arrived on scene, they found five patients, one of whom was in a critical condition. Bystander CPR was already in progress on the woman when crews arrived.

"The Critical Care Paramedics and Doctor from one of the Midlands Air Ambulances took over treatment and administered advanced life support on scene. But sadly, despite best efforts, nothing could be done to save the woman and she was confirmed dead at the scene.

“Meanwhile, the other air and land ambulance crews were assessing and treating the other patients involved in the collision.

“A man, believed to be the driver of one of the vehicles, was treated for serious injuries and flown to the Major Trauma Centre at Royal Stoke University Hospital, for further treatment.

“A woman who was a front seat passenger in one of the cars, was treated for potentially serious injuries and flown to Royal Stoke University Hospital for further treatment.

“Two teenage girls were treated at the scene for injuries not believed to be life threatening. One of the girls was conveyed to Royal Stoke University Hospital by air ambulance, whilst the other was taken by land ambulance on blue lights and sirens.

Witness Appeal

Police Sergeant Marc Whild, said: “While investigations are on-going to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident, we are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has dash cam footage to come forward. Our thoughts are with the family of the woman who has sadly died in this tragic incident.”

Anyone with information or footage is urged to call police on 101 quoting incident 00498i of 20 September or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. Alternatively, information can be reported on the West Mercia Police website.
