Two men were injured following a collision involving two large goods vehicles on the A41 near Market Drayton last night.

Two injured in collision on A41 near Market Drayton

The collision happened on the A41 at Stoke Heath at around 9pm.

A Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "On arrival at the scene the crews were faced with a collision which involved two large goods vehicle tankers with one having jackknifed, both vehicles had sustained a significant amount of damage.

"It was quickly established that one of the drivers was out of their vehicle and was receiving first aid from members of the public. Firefighters took over the care of the casualty and administered trauma care and oxygen therapy. The second driver was found to be still in their cab. On investigation it was discovered that the driver was not physically trapped but was suffering from injuries and shock and was in a considerable amount of pain.

"A firefighter trained in advanced trauma care was immediately tasked to care for the driver until the arrival of Paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service. Thankfully it was established that both tankers were carrying non-hazardous materials, and that the tanks had remained intact. Crews immediately set about stemming the flow of diesel from one of the vehicles damaged fuel tanks, and took action to prevent any of the spill entering any water courses.

"On the arrival of Paramedics an assessment of the driver was carried out and a decision was made that they could carefully be assisted from the vehicle. Fire crews set up an access platform to the cab to make it easier for the casualty and paramedics to exit the vehicle.

"Both drivers were transported to hospital by land ambulance for further assessment and treatment. We wish them both a speedy and full recovery from their injuries."

The A41 was closed in both directions between the Tern Hill roundabout and Rose Hill for some time to allow for the emergency services to work safely, collision investigation and the recovery of the vehicles.

Four fire appliances were mobilised to the incident from Hodnet, Market Drayton  and Wellington with an operations officer.

Police and West Midlands Ambulance Service also attended.
