New challenges, new people and new experiences are the reasons that Bev Ainsworth first volunteered at Hope House children’s hospice’s Shrewsbury charity shop.

Hope House’s Shrewsbury charity shop to host volunteer day

The charity shop in Harlescott is holding a Volunteer Recruitment Day on Saturday 13th July from 11am-3pm. Ahead of the event, Bev is urging others to find out more about the benefits of volunteering.

Bev, aged 39, has volunteered at her local Hope House shop for two years and says she loves it, and would recommend the role to everyone.

The Shrewsbury mum of three works at the shop on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Her favourite jobs are on the till and sorting clothes.

“I like working here, as it’s varied. I can do a bit of everything. I have a laugh with other staff and customers, and there’s something different every day. The team have been supportive and flexible around a recent operation, and really welcoming now that I’m fit again. My skills and my confidence have grown, and it’s a really good experience. There are always good bargains to be had for me and my daughters!”

Volunteering Officer Diane Murr will be heading the recruitment day, talking about how people can help Hope House children’s hospice charity, and the ways that volunteering benefits individuals such as Bev.

Diane says: “Volunteering can benefit our wellbeing by providing friendship and connections with a team of people with a mutual goal of raising money to help local families. Volunteers share skills and learn new ones, which in turn can boost confidence and self-esteem. Giving your time for a vitally important cause brings a sense of belonging and fulfilment.

“At this time of year, we also offer short-term work experience and holiday opportunities for students aged 16 plus. This is a great way to pick up employment skills and experience for young people to add to their CV or to improve university applications."
