Rednal community invited to have their say on plans for energy storage facility

The local community in Rednal is being asked to participate in a public consultation on an innovative proposal for a 300MW Battery Energy Storage System at Rednal Airfield.
Elmya Energy, which has operated in the UK for over 10 years, has partnered with Renewable Power Capital for the planned project with the backing of CPP Investments.
The battery storage system will store excess energy created during strong winds, bright sun, or periods of low demand. They can then release the energy when demand is high, even when the sun isn’t shining, or the wind isn’t blowing. This means homes and businesses can be powered consistently at all hours of the day, making this technology essential in the replacement of fossil fuels and imported energy.
The proposed site, located to the east of the old Rednal Airfield, was carefully selected to minimise its environmental and community impact.
The state-of-the-art facility aims to store energy from a mixture of sources and release it into the National Grid during peak demand, helping to stabilise the network and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
If approved, this facility will power the equivalent 163,350 average-sized homes consuming 3,600 kWh annually and play a vital role in both supporting Shropshire Council’s climate commitments to cut carbon emissions by 2030, as well as ensuring national energy security.
A consultation began on Tuesday 14 January and will last for two weeks, with residents encouraged to provide feedback on the transformative project via the website rednalbess.com.
James Innes, UK Development Director at Elmya, said:
"The Rednal BESS project represents an essential step towards decarbonising the economy while ensuring greater energy security for the local community. We’re eager to hear from residents and businesses in West Felton and across Shropshire to ensure these proposals reflects their priorities and delivers tangible benefits for the region."
