Shootout thriller sees Telford Tigers edge Solway Sharks in NIHL clash

Autocraft Telford Tigers secured a dramatic 6-5 victory over the Solway Sharks on Saturday night in a frantic NIHL National League clash at Telford Ice Rink, eventually settling the score in a sudden-death penalty shootout.
In the first meeting of the season between the two sides, Telford looked to capitalise on a Solway team that had travelled following a loss to Leeds Knights the previous evening.
An early penalty for the Sharks' Liam Danskin proved costly, as the Tigers’ power play unit broke the deadlock just ten seconds into the man-advantage. David Thomson was on hand to collect a loose puck in the slot and fire it past Solway netminder Jordan Marr for the opening goal.
A scrappy first period saw the home side double their lead late on. A swift break saw Eric Henderson and Patrick Brown combine perfectly, with Brown’s precise cross-ice pass allowing Henderson to rifle the puck high into the top-right corner of the goal.
The second period ignited the goalscoring. Solway pulled one back five minutes in when Carter Hamill pounced on a rebound off Tigers' netminder Brad Day. However, the Tigers hit back immediately, with Thomson claiming his second of the night from a rebound off Marr just a minute later.
Tensions flared as the referees, Smith and Rose, drew the ire of the home crowd by seemingly missing several Solway infractions. The frustrations boiled over when Danny Rose took matters into his own hands following an uncalled late hit on James Mather, earning himself a four-minute penalty for roughing.
Despite being a man down, Telford extended their lead. Henderson broke away, and though his initial shot was saved, Brown was there to slam the rebound home for Telford’s fourth.
The match then took a contentious turn late in the period. After a fierce tussle saw Deakan Fielder and Hamill drop the gloves—a bout which saw Fielder emerge the clear winner despite Hamill’s spirited celebration—Solway seized the momentum. Two soft goals followed in quick succession: Scott Henderson scored first, then a disappointing solo effort from Derek Osik beat Day on his blocker side, shrinking the Tigers’ lead to just one goal.
The poor defending continued into the third, with Dylan Stewart's weak shot deflecting past Day to level the scores in the opening minute.
Telford regained the lead three minutes later with a power play goal from Eric Henderson—his second of the game. Yet, the lead was short-lived as Solway levelled again five minutes later when Kyle Carruth broke away unopposed to score with a low shot.
With no further scoring, the game headed into sudden-death overtime. Despite heavy possession, the Tigers couldn't beat Marr, forcing the game to a penalty shootout.
In the initial three shots, only Brynley Capps scored for Telford, matching Stewart’s goal for Solway, sending the shootout to sudden death. Capps stepped up again to score, leaving Jake Bolton needing a goal to keep the Sharks in it. Bolton’s shot flew high over the goal, sealing the hard-fought 6-5 victory and two crucial league points for the Tigers.
The Tigers’ scorers were David Thomson (2), Eric Henderson (2), and Patrick Brown. Deakan Fielder was named Man of the Match for his feisty performance.
Speaking after the game, Head Coach Tom Watkins admitted his frustration despite the win. “We managed to secure the two points in the end after coming up against a stubborn Solway team who competed very hard and got themselves back in the game when they were three goals behind.
“I think that’s the frustration that we have, giving up goals and not putting games to bed when we are in the ascendancy. Mentally we were up to the challenge tonight but you can’t keep giving goals away like we did and we gave up too much momentum. On another night we could have come unstuck and lost the game so we need to learn the lesson for the future.”
