Rising costs see Shrewsbury Flower Show put on hold for second year

The Shropshire Horticultural Society has confirmed that the historic Shrewsbury Flower Show will not take place for a second year running. The Society’s leadership cited the "rocketing" costs of production as the primary reason for the hiatus.
Maelor Owen, Chairman of the Society, described the move as a difficult and sad decision for everyone involved. He noted that while the event remains a cornerstone of Shropshire life, the current format of the show has become unsustainable in the face of rising expenses.
This pause is intended to allow the organisers time to re-evaluate how the event can continue to exist in a modern economic climate. The Society is currently exploring several avenues for the future, including a collaboration with a local events consultant to devise a more manageable format.
Discussions are also underway with Shrewsbury Town Council regarding future cooperation. While there have been initial talks with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) about a potential joint venture, the RHS is fully committed to other projects for the next several years, meaning any partnership is unlikely to bear fruit in the immediate future.
Despite the cancellation of the main event, the Society intends to remain active within the community. Plans are being finalised for a series of smaller horticultural events, including public talks and garden visits. These initiatives aim to keep the spirit of the show alive for both members and the general public while the larger strategy is refined.
This change in direction also brings an unexpected benefit to the local area. Historically, the Shropshire Horticultural Society has been a major benefactor to the town, funding landmarks such as the Porthill Suspension Bridge and the restoration of St Chad’s Church tower.
Because the Society will not be committing its substantial financial resources to the 2026 show, it has pledged to increase its donations to local horticultural and community causes over the coming year.
