Shrewsbury Town appoint new head coach
Shrewsbury Town have confirmed the appointment of Gavin Cowan as the club’s new head coach, following the successful negotiation of a compensation package with Brackley Town.

The move marks a significant homecoming for the former Salop defender, who takes the reins during a period of transition for the League One outfit.
The club has also bolstered its coaching ranks with the addition of a familiar face. Dave Edwards, a certified club legend and fan favourite, joins the management team as joint assistant head coach. Edwards will work alongside Jamie Haynes, Cowan’s long-term right-hand man and a former product of the Shrewsbury Town youth system, who completes the new-look dugout.
Cowan arrives at the Croud Meadow with an impressive managerial pedigree forged in the National League North. After beginning his coaching career at AFC Telford United - where he guided the Bucks to the FA Trophy semi-finals - he moved to Brackley Town. His tenure with The Saints was nothing short of historic, as he led the club to its first-ever promotion to the National League after clinching the league title. His tactical acumen was further highlighted by a memorable FA Cup run that saw Brackley defeat Notts County en route to the second round.
Speaking on his appointment, Cowan expressed his pride in returning to the club where he once played. He noted that the last few days had been a whirlwind but emphasised his excitement for the challenge ahead. Cowan stressed that his primary goal is to foster unity between the supporters, the board, and the playing squad, promising to build a football club that the local community can be proud of. He added that the presence of Haynes and Edwards alongside him provides immense confidence, citing their shared passion and deep-rooted connection to the town.
The appointment comes in the wake of the departure of Michael Appleton and his assistant, Richard O’Donnell, on Wednesday. The club confirmed that the pair left by mutual consent, bringing an end to a tenure that began in March of last year. In an official statement, the club thanked Appleton and O’Donnell for their professionalism and integrity during their time in Shropshire, wishing them well in their future endeavours.
As the Cowan era begins, the new management team faces the immediate task of galvanising the squad for the remainder of the season.
