Government confirms end of Madeley Court Hotel being used for housing asylum seekers

The Government has today confirmed that Madeley Court Hotel will no longer be used for housing asylum seekers in the coming weeks, following renewed calls made by Shaun Davies MP for the site to be returned to the local community.

Since his election in July 2024, Shaun Davies has led a relentless campaign to close Madeley Court asylum hotel, making clear that hotels are simply not the right place to house people in the asylum system and that the site should be returned to community use.

Shaun has repeatedly challenged Ministers, raised the issue in Parliament, and met directly with both the Prime Minister at Downing Street and Home Office Ministers, pressing for the immediate closure of the hotel and securing a firm guarantee that Telford will not be used again for further Home Office accommodation.

Just one week ago, Shaun again escalated his concerns directly with the Government over the continued use of Madeley Court. The Government has now confirmed that the hotel will close, bringing an end to its use as asylum accommodation.

Commenting on the announcement, Shaun said: “This is the right decision for Telford and for the people who have been living in the hotel. Madley Court is a legacy of the previous Conservative government’s failed asylum system, which relied heavily on hotels because decisions were not being made quickly enough. This is about fairness, fairness to local residents who want their hotel back, and fairness to those seeking asylum. Long-term hotel accommodation was never appropriate or fair to them.”

The closure forms part of the Government’s wider action to end the over-reliance on asylum hotels, speed up asylum decision-making, reduce costs to the taxpayer, and restore hotels to local communities.

“This Government is fixing a broken system and starting to restore our communities. I will continue to keep residents updated as this process moves forward.”
