Ludlow Town Council has taken a significant step towards safeguarding the town’s iconic market by installing new parking restriction signage around the square.

Ludlow Town Council introduces new parking signage at historic market square

This initiative is part of an ongoing commitment to protect the working environment of local traders while ensuring the town centre remains a welcoming and accessible space for all visitors.

The move comes as a direct response to the challenges faced by stallholders, for whom the market is far more than just a place of business. Council officials have highlighted that every stall represents a livelihood built on early mornings and long hours in all weathers. When vehicles are parked inappropriately, even briefly, they often block vital access and delay set-ups, placing an unnecessary strain on the individuals who maintain the town’s vibrant character.

In light of these changes, the Council is issuing an appeal to residents, visitors, and delivery drivers to pay close attention to the new signs. By following these restrictions, motorists can make a tangible difference to the daily lives of the traders who keep the historic market thriving. This act of consideration is being framed as a vital contribution to preserving the charm and functionality of the market square.

Looking ahead, Ludlow Town Council is continuing to develop a formal Parking Order in close partnership with Shropshire Council. A key part of this process involves a collaboration with Shropshire’s newly appointed Interim Executive Manager for Strategic Transport, who is scheduled to attend an upcoming Full Council meeting. This expert guidance will assist the local authority in drafting a workable parking policy that balances the needs of all stakeholders.

The Council has confirmed that once a draft policy is finalised, it will be shared for public consultation to ensure the local community has a say in its implementation. The ultimate goal is to create a fair and safe environment that enhances the visitor experience while protecting the livelihoods of those who bring life to Ludlow.

Members of the public are being urged not to wait for the introduction of formal orders before changing their parking habits. By choosing to respect the signage now, the community can immediately help ease the burden on local traders and ensure the market remains a sustainable pillar of Ludlow’s economy.
