£100k of funding awarded to hospital Trust for energy upgrades

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) has been awarded £100,000 to install clean energy upgrades, helping to reduce energy bills.

Funding will be used to replace existing lighting with modern energy-efficient LED technology. The upgrade is expected to significantly reduce electricity usage while improving lighting quality throughout the Trust’s buildings.

LED lighting that will be installed across both hospitals and off-site locations, uses less energy than traditional lighting systems and has a much longer lifespan. By transitioning to LED technology, the Trust expects to cut energy costs, reduce maintenance requirements and contribute to wider sustainability goals.

Trust leaders say the investment will play an important role in improving operational efficiency while supporting the organisation’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

Ned Hobbs, Deputy Chief Executive, said: “Securing this funding is an important step forward in our efforts to improve the sustainability of our estate whilst ensuring the best possible environment for patients, visitors and staff.

“Energy-efficient LED lighting will help us reduce our carbon footprint and energy costs, while also delivering brighter and more reliable lighting across our facilities.”

Work to install the new LED lighting is expected to begin in the coming months, with upgrades taking place in phases to minimise disruption to patient care and day-to-day operations.

The project forms part of the Trust’s wider programme to modernise infrastructure and support long-term environmental sustainability.

This includes solar power installation at both hospital sites and upgrades to energy management systems at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. This ongoing work forms part of the Trust’s Estates Decarbonisation Strategies, Green Plan and national NHS ambitions of reaching Net Zero by 2040.

Once completed, the lighting upgrades are expected to deliver long-term savings while
