Telford’s economy surges as manufacturing and defence investment drive local growth
Telford & Wrekin Council has reported significant progress on its Economic Development Strategy, highlighting a period of robust growth, high-profile investment, and a manufacturing sector that continues to dwarf national averages.

At a Cabinet meeting held today, 26 March, the council provided an update on the work of Invest Telford, the authority’s business support arm. The report emphasised ongoing efforts to attract inward investment, assist existing local firms, and enhance skills training across the Borough to meet the needs of a modern workforce.
The figures reveal that Telford and Wrekin’s economy remains one of the strongest in the region. With a Gross Value Added (GVA) of £5.4 billion and 5,900 active enterprises, the area is a powerhouse for industry. Notably, manufacturing and engineering account for 15.5% of local jobs—more than double the national average—while unemployment rates consistently remain below the UK's typical levels.
Throughout 2025, Invest Telford engaged with more than 300 businesses. This included the delivery of several UK Shared Prosperity Fund programmes, such as 77 contracted business grant and innovation projects. Support was also extended to over 100 new start-ups through the Start Up Telford initiative, alongside targeted growth and innovation assistance for established small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
A key highlight of the report was the Borough’s expanding defence sector. Cabinet members noted the recent confirmation from Rheinmetall that Telford will host its new UK large-calibre barrel production facility. This major investment, which is expected to create more than 400 direct and indirect jobs, was secured following dedicated engagement by the Council to prove why Telford was the premier choice over other UK locations.
To ensure the local workforce is ready for these high-tech roles, progress on the Skills for Growth partnership was also showcased. This collaboration brings together Harper Adams University, Telford College, and In-Comm Training to provide a coordinated, employer-led skills offer. Furthermore, the newly established Invest Telford Partnership- a senior-level forum - now connects major employers and education providers to shape the Borough’s economic priorities following the closure of the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership.
Councillor Ollie Vickers, Cabinet Member for The Economy & Transport, said:
“This report shows that our Economic Development Strategy is being delivered at pace and with impact. We are supporting local businesses, attracting significant investment and ensuring that our skills system responds directly to employer need. Our ambition is clear, to build a resilient, inclusive economy that creates high-quality opportunities for local people and long-term prosperity for the Borough.”
