Partnership formed to restore Ludlow’s Historic Town Wall
Ludlow Town Council and St Laurence’s Parochial Church Council have announced a collaborative agreement to begin the restoration of the collapsed historic town wall situated near St Laurence’s Church.

Working in close partnership with the Ludlow Town Walls Trust, the organisations have set out a series of preliminary steps designed to secure the long-term future of the ancient structure.
The initial phase of the project involves instructing a firm of structural engineers to prepare a detailed specification of works. This document will serve as the foundation for inviting formal quotations from contractors and will allow the partnership to commence the process of obtaining the necessary legal permissions. Furthermore, these specifications will be vital when approaching various grant-making bodies to request financial assistance for the restoration costs.
As part of the preservation efforts, the Parochial Church Council is seeking the required civic planning permissions and diocesan faculties to facilitate the removal of trees currently located adjacent to the wall. Technical experts have advised that these trees pose a significant threat to the structural integrity of both the current masonry and any future repairs. To ensure the churchyard remains a vibrant green space, the partnership intends to plant alternative flowering trees at a safe distance from the wall once the works are underway.
While the partners recognise the public interest in the financial aspects of the restoration, it is currently too soon to provide a definitive estimate of the total costs. The organisations have committed to sharing this information as soon as it is practicable to do so, following the receipt and analysis of contractor quotations.
The Council, the Parochial Church Council, and the Ludlow Town Walls Trust have emphasised that these actions are essential for the continued prosperity of the community and the local economy.
