Expected completion date for new M54/M6 link road welcomed

Telford & Wrekin Council has welcomed news that a long-awaited bypass which will link the M54 to the northbound M6 has been confirmed as a flagship project in the Government’s £27 billion national road investment strategy.

Expected completion date for new M54/M6 link road welcomed

The road will link the M6 at Laney Green in Staffordshire and Junction 1 of the M54 at Featherstone.

The Government announced this week that the £200 million, two-mile long stretch will fix a gap in Telford’s motorway network and be open to traffic within the next five years.

Linking the M6 at Laney Green in Staffordshire and Junction 1 of the M54 at Featherstone, the scheme is expected to take up to 19,000 vehicles a day off local roads, cut journey times for commuters and businesses and generate more than £600 million for the local economy.

The project was given the go-ahead from the Government in 2025, and survey work on a finalised preferred route for the link road has been ongoing since the start of this year.

Councillor Lee Carter, Telford & Wrekin Council Leader, said: “This is fantastic news for Telford and shows that the Government is prioritising this stretch of road which is of vital importance to the prosperity and connectivity of our Borough, putting us firmly on the map.

“Telford is one of the fastest-growing towns in the Midlands, home to major employers and thousands of daily commuters and the link road will strengthen our links to Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, the wider West Midlands and beyond.

“The new link will cut journey times and unlock access to jobs - not just in Telford, but across the wider region - and ensure Telford remains a key player in the Midlands economy.

“We can’t wait to see work start on this flagship project and its completion by 2031.”

Shaun Davies, MP for Telford, has championed the project for more than a decade first as Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council and more recently in Parliament following his election in July 2024. He has welcomed the announcement as a transformational moment for Telford.

“After 10 years of fighting for this vital connection, I am absolutely thrilled that the M54 to M6 Link Road is now going ahead. This is a huge win for Telford and a clear sign that our town is firmly on the map for major national investment.”

Shaun added: “For years, residents and businesses have faced delays and congestion. Now we can look forward to a future with better connectivity, stronger growth, and improved daily life for thousands of people. I’ve heard directly from local businesses about the difference this link road will make from creating jobs, unlocking opportunities, and supporting growth. This is what real investment in our region looks like.

“Telford is on the move and this is just the start.”
