Shropshire’s best "Gotchas": A roundup of the county’s top April Fools' pranks

From neon-dyed fire hoses in Market Drayton to wheelbarrow police patrols in Shifnal, Shropshire’s sense of humour was out in full force this morning. Here are the pranks that had us double-taking.

Shropshire’s best "Gotchas": A roundup of the county’s top April Fools' pranks

It’s the one morning of the year when you can’t trust your local emergency services, festivals, or even play centres. April 1st arrived in Shropshire with a wave of "breaking news" that ranged from the delightfully colourful to the downright absurd.

If you fell for any of these today, don't worry - you’re in good company. Here is our roundup of the best Shropshire foolery from across the county.

1. Market Drayton’s "Fabulous" Firefighting

Market Drayton Fire Station wins the award for the most vibrant prank of the day. They announced that all water used to extinguish fires would now be high-visibility dyed to improve night-time accuracy.

The station claimed to be trialling “Blue Blast” for standard fires, “Green Stream” for the outdoors, and a dramatic “Red Rush.” While they promised the water was "completely safe and slightly more fabulous."

2. Shifnal & Albrighton’s New "Supercar"

The Shifnal and Albrighton Mobile Safer Neighbourhood Team decided to "upgrade" their fleet this morning with the Mark 1 Wheelbarrow Patrol Unit.

Touting its "outstanding manoeuvrability" and a top speed "entirely dependent on whoever is pushing," the team claimed the unit performed brilliantly on the downhill stretches past Beckbury Village Hall. It’s certainly one way to beat the rising cost of fuel - if not dignity.

3. The Dingle’s "SwimFest"

Shropshire Festivals caused a splash by suggesting a brand-new use for the ornamental ponds in Shrewsbury’s Quarry Park. They announced Shropshire SwimFest, a one-day event that will take over The Dingle.

The post promised butterfly sprint races among the flowers and beach ball obstacle courses. While the idea of swimming in the Dingle is a lovely (if chilly) thought, we suggest keeping your goggles firmly in the drawer for now.

4. “Market Drayton Pool’s Tandem Workout Challenge”

Why cycle alone when you can struggle for balance with a partner? Market Drayton Swimming Pool introduced Tandem Indoor Cycling classes.

Encouraging locals to "let out their inner Greg James," the pool claimed that working out is better together - even if "balance is a challenge and laughter is guaranteed." It’s a great idea in theory, but we suspect the coordination required might lead to more falls than fitness.

5. The Prank That… Might Actually Be a Good Idea?

Finally, FunZone Whitchurch announced "FunZone After Dark," an adults-only soft play night featuring Prosecco, 90s throwbacks, and a strict "no kids" policy. "If you pull a hamstring in the ball pit… that’s between you and your GP," the post warned.

While posted in the spirit of April Fools', the public reaction has been unanimous: we actually want this! Adults racing down slides without judgment, dancing to 90s classics, sign us up! FunZone Whitchurch might have accidentally stumbled onto Shropshire's next big business venture!
