Telford & Wrekin Council strengthens regional ties with new Spatial Strategy
Telford & Wrekin Council has officially submitted a new Spatial Development Strategy proposal, aiming to solidify its long-standing economic and social connections with the Black Country and the wider West Midlands.

The move, confirmed by Council Leader Lee Carter, seeks to capitalise on nearly ten years of the local authority's non-constituent membership within the West Midlands Combined Authority.
Councillor Carter emphasised that the proposal is rooted in decades of existing relationships involving trade, business, and transport, as well as the deep-seated family and housing links that bind the regions together.
According to the Council Leader, the primary objective of the strategy is to secure the maximum possible level of private sector investment for the borough. By aligning more closely with regional development goals, the council hopes to stimulate significant employment growth and ensure that the tangible benefits of economic expansion are felt directly by local residents.
Addressing potential speculation regarding local government restructuring, Councillor Carter clarified that the proposal does not signal an immediate move toward deeper devolution.
He noted that the council is not currently engaged in any other formal discussions regarding a change in status. Furthermore, he maintained that the current consultation on spatial development should not be viewed as a commitment to the future creation of a new Strategic Authority.
