Parked cars delay firefighters responding to fire in Bridgnorth
Firefighters were delayed when responding to a fire in Bridgnorth this morning, Thursday 16 April, after they had difficulty navigating parked cars.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to a fire at St Leonard’s Steps, requiring an immediate deployment of fire appliances.
However, the urgency of the mission was met with a series of avoidable bottlenecks. As the crew attempted to negotiate Cartway, Friars Street, and Riverside, crews found their path repeatedly blocked by poorly positioned vehicles.
West Mercia Police officers were called to the scene specifically to assist the fire service in clearing a route.
In an emergency where every second lost can lead to the catastrophic spread of flames or the loss of life, the minutes spent manoeuvring around bumpers and wing mirrors created a delay that frustrated emergency services.
This incident has highlighted the critical importance of Operation Clearway, a West Mercia Police priority. The initiative specifically targets obstructive parking that threatens public safety by paralysing the emergency services.
While Bridgnorth is celebrated for its picturesque, winding streets, the very charm of its geography makes it vulnerable when residents and visitors fail to park with large vehicles in mind.
Police are reminding motorists that a "quick stop" or a slightly skewed parked vehicle can have dire consequences. Emergency appliances are significantly wider and longer than the average family car, requiring ample clearance to navigate tight corners and steep gradients.
