Families across the county have received news today, Thursday 16 April, as school place allocations for September 2026 were officially released.

Success for families as majority secure top school choice on National Offer Day

On what is known as National Offer Day, local authorities confirmed that the vast majority of children have been successfully matched with their preferred primary schools, with figures showing an improvement in satisfaction levels compared to the previous year.

In the Shropshire Council area, the results were particularly high, with more than 99% of children being offered a place at one of their preferred schools. Out of 2,582 on-time applications, a significant 97.4% - representing 2,516 children - were granted their first-choice school. The council confirmed that every child who applied on time was allocated a place, and only four children across the entire area were not matched with one of their listed preferences. These four individuals were instead allocated an alternative preference.

Andy Hall, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for children and education, said:

“At this stage in the admissions process, we’re delighted that, as in previous years, a high percentage of pupils have been offered their first preference school.- and over 99% per cent of Shropshire parents have been offered a place at one of their four preferred schools.

“The really good news this year is that Shropshire children who received their first preference is 97.4%, and 99.8% received one of their preferred schools. This is an increase from last year, with just four children not being allocated a preferred school.

“We’ve always met a high percentage of first preference requests and have always been ranked amongst the top three West Midlands authorities – something we’re very proud of.”

The picture was similarly positive in Telford and Wrekin, where 98% of children were offered a place at one of their preferred schools. Of the 2,087 applications processed before the January deadline, 1,906 children—or 91%—secured their first-choice school. A further 99 applicants received their second choice, while 36 were given their third and five their fourth. As with the wider Shropshire area, every child who applied was guaranteed a place within the borough.

Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education, Employment and Skills, said:

“Year on year, we are consistently able to offer a majority of parents and carers a place for their child at one of their preferred primary schools, with the vast majority being offered their first preference.

“This is positive news and underlines our continued commitment to protecting, caring for and investing in our services, while increasing school places and widening flexibility and choice for parents and carers.

“In recent years our Council has been investing heavily in schools across the Borough, expanding schools’ capacity by hundreds of places, to ensure every local child and young person can attend a local school and benefit from modern facilities.

“With just a few months to go until children begin their school journey, I’d encourage parents and carers to take a look at our 5 by 5 initiative, which suggests lots of activities for children to try to help them feel ready and confident to start school.”
