Police and Trading Standards clamp down on underage knife sales in two Shropshire towns
Police officers and Trading Standards officials have carried out a series of undercover sting operations targeting the illegal sale of knives to minors across two Shropshire towns.

The multi-agency operation, which took place last week, saw police officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) join forces with Shropshire Trading Standards to conduct age-related test purchases.
The enforcement action forms a key part of Operation Sceptre, a national, ongoing police initiative aimed at tackling knife-related crime and removing dangerous weapons from local streets.
During the targeted checks, officials visited a total of 11 retail premises, focusing on commercial premises. Eight retailers were tested in Bridgnorth, alongside a further three shops in Ludlow.
The compliance rate among local businesses was high, with the vast majority passing the test. Out of the 11 premises visited, eight correctly challenged the underage buyers and refused the sale after asking for identification.
However, three retailers failed the operation by attempting to sell blades to the underage purchasers without checking for appropriate ID.
Rather than facing immediate prosecution, the three failing shops were issued with strict "words of advice" by Trading Standards officers. The official guidance was given to ensure the business owners and their staff fully understand and meet their legal responsibilities moving forward. Under UK law, it is illegal to sell a knife or blade to anyone under the age of 18.
Following the operation, local authorities praised the responsible businesses that complied with the law, thanking the retailers who continue to play their part in keeping Shropshire communities safe.
