Shropshire Live set for DAB radio expansion from The Wrekin

Independent local news and entertainment platform Shropshire Live has announced an ambitious expansion plan to broadcast on digital radio across central Shropshire.

Shropshire Live set for DAB radio expansion from The Wrekin

Starting this summer, Shropshire Live will begin broadcasting on DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) utilising a brand new SSDAB (small-scale DAB) transmitter on Shropshire’s most iconic landmark: The Wrekin.

Expanding Local Radio Choice

Since 2009, Shropshire Live has been a staple of the region's media landscape, delivering hyper-local news, traffic updates, and music exclusively via its website, online streams, smart speakers and mobile apps. The shift to DAB represents a massive upgrade in accessibility.

Unlike traditional, high-power national radio setups that require immense infrastructure, small-scale DAB (SSDAB) uses ultra-efficient, modern digital transmitters to provide localised, digital radio to a specific area.

By utilising the unique geography of The Wrekin - which rises 407 meters (1,335 feet) above the Shropshire Plain - the new transmitter will achieve an unparalleled line-of-sight advantage across major population hubs, including Telford, Shrewsbury and surrounding towns and villages.

"We've been planning this expansion for months, and there is no better home for the new transmitter than the highest, most recognisable point in the county," said Chris Pritchard, Editor of Shropshire Live. "Taking our programming to digital radio means listeners can take us in the car, onto their kitchen radios, and everywhere else they expect local broadcasting."

The official summer switch-on is set to happen once the new transmitter goes into service.

What This Means for Listeners

Zero Cost to Retune: Listeners will simply need to hit the "Autotune" or "Scan" button on their home or car DAB radios this summer. Shropshire Live will appear alphabetically on the station list.

Crystal-Clear Audio: The upgrade to SSDAB eliminates the static or fade common with old analogue signals, delivering stable, high-fidelity sound across central Shropshire and the surrounding area.

Hyper-Local Focus: Because SSDAB targets specific geographic areas, Shropshire Live will remain entirely focused on local news, events, and culture for Shropshire.

The exact launch date will be released in the coming weeks.

Your Business on Shropshire Live

Since 2009, Shropshire Live has built a loyal, highly engaged digital audience across the county. Moving onto the DAB airwaves means they are breaking out of web browsers, smart speakers and mobile apps straight into the dashboards of thousands of commuters, kitchen radios, and workplaces across Shropshire.

Unlocking the "In-Car" Audience

If your business targets local homeowners, commuters, or tradespeople, you will be landing your message right in their ears at a time when they are active and ready to buy.

Hyper-Local Focus with Premium Credibility

Unlike large regional or national commercial stations that lump Shropshire into the wider West Midlands, Shropshire Live is fiercely independent and since 2009 deeply rooted in the local community. When you advertise alongside trusted local news, traffic updates, and homegrown presenters, your business inherits that community trust.

Unbeatable Value and First-Mover Advantage

Radio advertising has a unique ability to build top-of-mind awareness through frequency - people need to hear a message a few times before it sticks, and radio delivers that repetition naturally.

Because Shropshire Live is launching on DAB this summer, early adopters have a massive first-mover advantage. Securing advertising packages now allows you to reach a rapidly expanding audience at local independent rates, offering a far better return on investment.

It’s a powerful, cost-effective way to ensure that when a local resident needs your product or service, your business is the first name they think of.
