Two Shropshire bookshops revealed as finalists in British Book Awards 2026
Two Shropshire bookshops have been revealed as regional finalists in the British Book Awards 2026.

The independent bookselling sector across the United Kingdom and Ireland is witnessing a remarkable surge in resilience, with local retailers thriving through a combination of creative flair and deep-rooted community engagement. Despite the ongoing pressures of the cost-of-living crisis and the perennial challenge of business rates, these specialist hubs are reporting robust activity by transforming into much more than mere retail spaces.
This year marks a significant milestone for the industry with the largest-ever cohort of contenders for the British Book Awards 2026 Independent Bookshop of the Year. A total of 76 shops have been shortlisted across nine distinct regions and countries.
Shropshire has secured a strong foothold in the competition with two standout regional finalists. Burway Books in Church Stretton and the uniquely conceptual Poetry Pharmacy in Bishop’s Castle have both been recognised for their exceptional contribution to the local cultural landscape. These establishments exemplify the passion and specialist knowledge that the award, sponsored by wholesaler Gardners, seeks to celebrate.
Tom Tivnan, deputy editor of The Bookseller, noted that the quality of this year’s submissions has been "Grade-A" across the board. He observed that while the wider High Street faces well-documented travails, independent bookshops are meeting these difficulties with a blend of grit and innovation. By launching festivals, wellness groups, and fundraisers, these shops are proactively addressing local needs while maintaining their core mission of spreading the joy of reading.
The competition this year is particularly fierce, with several previous champions returning to the fray. The Heath Bookshop in Birmingham, which took the overall title last year, is vying for a consecutive win alongside the 2023 victor, Griffin Books from Penarth. They are joined by a formidable list of defending regional winners, including Maldon Books in Essex and the Medina Bookshop on the Isle of Wight, all of whom have managed to maintain their high standards in a volatile economic climate.
Meryl Halls, Managing Director of the Booksellers Association, described these retailers as the "unsung heroes" of the industry. She emphasized that during this National Year of Reading, the role of the bookseller as a community pillar is more vital than ever. As the sector prepares for another year of financial hurdles, the shortlist serves as a testament to the cultural diversity and social value these businesses provide to their towns and cities.
The regional and country winners are set to be announced on Tuesday 10th March, providing a stepping stone to the grand final. The ultimate winner will be revealed during a prestigious ceremony at Grosvenor House London on Monday 11th May 2026, where the successful shop will walk away with the title and a £5,000 prize.
