New community tennis centre opens in Telford
Telford and Wrekin’s new £2.2m pay and play community tennis centre is set to opens its doors to the public today for the first time.
The new eight court indoor and outdoor tennis centre will open for business at the Oakengates Leisure Centre site and the good weather forecast for the weekend is expected to mean a busy start.
The Telford Tennis Centre represents the first phase of the new Oakengates Sports and Learning Community, a new sports, educational and community facility for the local area.
David Sidaway, Telford & Wrekin Council’s head of property, said: “The new tennis centre is a fantastic sports facility for the whole of the borough and will be an excellent addition to the council’s leisure offer.
“It is a clear demonstration of our commitment to ensuring Telford and Wrekin has the best possible leisure facilities.
“We hope that people of all ages and abilities will use the centre and we have a comprehensive coaching programme in place to help people improve their game.”
The new centre is set to work closely with schools and parks to deliver a family tennis programme for the community which caters for players of all ages and abilities across the borough.
It also includes the development of coaches and volunteers. The new centre will also give local players the opportunity to play competitively on a regional and national level.
FirstPoint Tennis Coaching Ltd has been appointed by Telford & Wrekin Council to provide coaching sessions and competitions for all ages and abilities.
The tennis centre is funded by Telford & Wrekin Council, the Department for Education, Partnership for Schools and the Lawn Tennis Association.
