Shropshire residents urged to secure homes and to be vigilant

Police are urging Shropshire householders to keep their homes safe and secure in a bid to keep opportunist thieves at bay.

Shropshire residents urged to secure homes and to be vigilant

Officers are warning residents to lock all of their doors and windows when they go out and when they go to bed, especially with the warmer weather.

Other security measures being encouraged by Police include installing security lights and for people not to leave keys in doors.

The warning comes following two break-ins at homes in Telford during the last few days.

The first happened at an address in Stanmore Drive in Trench some time between 6pm on Friday and 8.35pm on Monday. An unknown person forced a window to the property. No property is believed to have been stolen.

Then some time between 8.55am and 12.20pm on Tuesday a break-in occurred at a home in Hancocks Drive in Oakengates. A window was forced to the property and an untidy search was carried out in a number of rooms. Nothing was stolen.

On both occasions the properties were left secure.

Police are investigating the incidents and are now reminding residents to be security conscious and to call Police if they see any suspicious activity within their community.

A Telford Police spokeswoman said: “The reality is that most burglaries are carried out by opportunistic thieves who are looking for the easiest way of getting into a house without being seen or disturbed.

“It appears that in the latest two incidents the offenders were disturbed and left empty handed.

“We would urge all local residents to think about the security of their home to reduce their chances of becoming a victim to this type of crime.

“Please ensure that all your doors and windows are secure whenever you leave your property and if possible install a security alarm.

“Security lights are also another good option, along with timer lights within the property at night time.

“It only takes a few minutes to think this through but could make an enormous difference.”

Anyone with information about the two latest incidents of burglary should contact Telford Police on 0300 333 3000 or the anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555111.
