Wellington street party celebrates regeneration
Celebrations are in store today at a street party to celebrate the first stage of a major regeneration of Wellington town centre.

Wellington residents will join together today to mark the “new life”which has been breathed into their 12th century town with the part completion of an £8.4 million regeneration project.
Wellington Town Council’s promotions committee has organised a day long array of entertainment at a street party in the Square in Wellington from 10am to 4pm today with the help of Wrekin Lions and Telford businessman Trevor Bate.
A top young magician, barber shop quartet, Wellington’s town band, Caleigh music and country and western band, will entertain shoppers along with a music roadshow from RMP Events, of Stafford Park, Telford, which also has candy floss and popcorn for revellers. There will be children’s rides and face painting with a number of charities benefitting from the event.
Businessman Mr Bate, who also runs security firm RMP Guarding, is providing stewards for the day which includes a procession through New Street headed by the Wellington mayor.
Lions President Leica Ferriday said it promised to be an entertaining day out for all the family.
“I want to thank Trevor Bate from RMP Guarding for providing the entertainment free of charge and the stewards to keep people safe. He is running the music roadshow throughout the day and announcing the activities as they happen.”
Mr Bate said: “Wellington is a wonderful town and this is a perfect time to celebrate. People will have a lot of fun.”
Wellington town manager Chris Fry said that new life had been breathed into Wellington with the regeneration which included a new civic quarter, leisure centre refurbishment, new paving and a new toilet block.
“More people are coming to Wellington to shop because it is a vibrant, lively market town with a variety of shops for everyone. We now only have one shop empty in New Street and that is under offer. This is a real success story for Wellington and we will all be celebrating in style on May 21.”
Wellington Town Band will lead a procession at 11.30am from the Methodist Church down New Street to the Square where there will be an official opening ceremony at midday to celebrate the completion of the repaving project.
