Shropshire shoppers warned about distraction thefts
Shoppers in Shropshire are being warned by police to guard against distraction thieves looking for easy pickings.
The warning follows an incident in the car park of Morrisons supermarket in Maer Lane, Market Drayton at around 11.30am yesterday.
A woman was loading her car with shopping when an attempt was made to steal her handbag from inside the vehicle.
A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: “The shopper was approached by a woman who first asked if she could have her trolley and then produced a map asking for directions to Bradford. While this was going on, a man opened the car’s passenger door and tried to snatch her handbag.
“Fortunately, he was spotted by a passer-by who shouted disturbing the man and woman who made off. This was clearly an attempt to distract the car owner while the accomplice tried to take her handbag.”
The spokesperson added: “There have been several similar reports from different parts of the county in recent weeks. Shoppers should be on their guard and make sure their vehicles and belongings are secure at all times.”
