Five local voluntary groups will be using grants from Cllr. Ian Fletcher’s Mayoral Charity Fund to introduce new activities and extend their work of assisting people with chronic long term debilitating health issues to participate as fully as possible in community life on a day to day basis and enjoy the kind of social activities that others take for granted.

Cllr. Fletcher who recently completed his year of office as Mayor of Telford and Wrekin presented grants totalling around £5,000 at his Grants Presentation Evening on Thursday at Civic Offices, Telford.

Telford MIND’s grant will fund a Tai Chi exercise project, for people with mental health problems, at their Sutton Hill Wellbeing Centre.

Age UK Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin will purchase music, art and reminiscence therapy materials for their new ‘Drop In’ centre for elderly people with dementia and their carers. The Ketley Grange based centre is due to open later this Summer.

Club 2000 Sport and Leisure’s grant will enable them to fulfil a long held ambition to set up a drama group for adults with special needs.

Yoga classes will become a regular activity for members of Telford and District Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society with the help of their Mayoral Charity Fund grant. They will also invite local people suffering from Parkinson’s and mental health problems to join in the classes.

Telford and Wrekin Arthritis Support Group’s grant will assist them in funding the services of a qualified Physiotherapist to supervise exercises in their hydrotherapy sessions. The sessions are vital in relieving arthritic joint pain and help arthritis sufferers to remain as active as possible.

The Telford and Wrekin Mayoral Charity Fund is administered through a partnership between the Borough of Telford and Wrekin Council and the Community Foundation for Shropshire and Telford.

Cllr Fletcher said: “I am delighted to be able to present cheques for these grants to these five local organisations and would like to thank everybody who has made this excellent fundraising effort possible.

“I hugely enjoyed my year as Mayor for the borough of Telford and Wrekin and this presentation evening is a fitting way to conclude it.”
