Convicted Shropshire murderer Robin Ligus sentenced
A convicted murderer from Shropshire serving a life sentence will spend the rest of his life in a secure mental hospital after being sentenced today for killing two other people.
Robin Ligus, 59, from Shrewsbury, was jailed for life in 1996 for the murder of an elderly man in 1994 who was murdered during a burglary in his own home. The victim was 75-year-old Mr Young.
Today, Ligus was also sentenced for killing Trevor Bradley and Brian Coles in the same year.
The body of Trevor Bradley was found in April 1994 in his burnt out car near to Melverley, he was aged 53. The body of Brian Coles, aged 57, was found in October 1994 at his home in Higher Heath, near Whitchurch.
Ligus, who was deemed not fit to plead after having a stroke, had taken no part in the hearing at Birmingham Crown Court, which began in June this year and lasted six weeks.
In July the jury of the trial decided that Ligus was not responsible for the death of Bernard Czyzewska a murder Ligus has also been charged with. The body of Mr Czyzewska, aged 36, was found in the River Severn at Shrewsbury in November 1994.
During today’s sentencing, Ligus was told via videolink that he would serve his original sentence for murdering Mr Young in prison if in the future he was deemed "fit and safe" to be freed from hospital.
Robin Ligus will be detained under the Criminal Procedure Insanity Act 1964, he will be moved from Woodhill Prison in Milton Keynes to a medium secure unit at St Andrew’s Hospital in Northampton.
