Police today issued an appeal for witnesses to a sexual assault on a young woman in Shrewsbury's Quarry park.

Police appeal over Shrewsbury Quarry sex assault

The assault happened at some point between 11pm on Sunday and 1.30am Monday.

A 25-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and given police bail while enquiries continue.

The 18-year-old victim was left upset but not seriously hurt.

Detective Sergeant John Weaver said today: "The exact location in the Quarry is not clear. I am appealing to anyone who passed through the park late on Sunday night and up to around 1.30am on Monday, to contact Shrewsbury CID on 0300 333 3000 if they saw a couple engaged in sexual activity.

"It may not have been immediately apparent that an assault was taking place. We are anxious for witnesses who saw a couple together, to get in touch as they may be able to help the investigation."

He said the woman had earlier been talking with the man near the play area in the Quarry. "The man was carrying a carrier
bag and had with him a bottle of vodka and a small bottle of Coke. He was also carrying a pair of trainers in the carrier bag.
"Again, if you spotted them at this location at around 11pm or 11.30pm, do call the police."

Detective Sergeant Weaver added: "Although the incident happened late at night, the Quarry is used by many people as a short cut on their way home. If you saw a man and woman together, perhaps in a secluded part of the Quarry before 1.30am on Monday, please get in touch."
