Police officers in Telford are appealing for information as they investigate a burglary in Leegomery. The incident occurred at an address on Hurleybrook Way on Tuesday 3 January.

Burglars target elderly couple in Telford

Sometime between 12.20pm and 12.35pm an elderly Asian couple - who are both in their 80s - heard a knock at their front door.

The husband went to answer the door and was greeted by two unknown men who immediately pushed past him and entered the house. The push caused the elderly man to fall to the floor.

One of the men then held the elderly man on the floor while the other man took his wife into the lounge and made her sit down.

A police spokesman said: "The elderly couple were told to remain where they were and not to move and the two offenders then carried out a thorough search of the house, going through every single room.

"As a result of this search the men collected a significant amount of Asian gold jewellery and they then made off with it via the front door. It appears that some cash may also have been taken during this incident but at the present time this is yet to be confirmed.

"Understandably the elderly couple are extremely upset by this incident and they are currently being looked after and cared for by their family.

"Police have been given a description of one of the offenders. He is described as being white, around 30 years old, roughly 6ft tall and as having a medium build. He is also described as having short dark hair and as wearing a long black coat.

"This was a nasty incident where a vulnerable elderly couple appear to have been targeted. Police are very keen to identify the offenders as soon as possible and therefore anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact investigating officers immediately.

"Forensic work is continuing at the scene today and officers are hopeful that this work may offer up some new leads.

"Anyone who believes they may have information about this incident, or who may know the identity of the two offenders, is asked to call officers in Telford on 0300 333 3000.

"Alternatively, please remember that Crimestoppers can also be called anonymously on 0800 555 111 if you'd rather leave information without getting directly involved yourself."
