Newport supermarket plan approved by council
Campaigners against plans for a new supermarket in Newport say they are angry and let down over its planning approval.
Planners at Telford & Wrekin Council, last night approved the 8,100m sq Sainsbury’s store on Station Road, which includes a restaurant and 530 space car park.
The application originally included a proposal to build a petrol filling station, ancillary kiosk and car wash. Following concerns expressed by the Environment Agency however, this aspect of the proposals was removed.
Negative Impact
Objectors to the planned supermarket say the store will have a negative impact on the existing high street. They have accused Telford & Wrekin Council of not taking the views of the town’s residents into account.
The council had received over 450 letters of objection to the development, more than 100 people attended last night’s meeting.
Those opposed to the planning approval are today writing to the Secretary of State who has the power to 'call-in' planning applications for determination.
St Modwen Developments who applied for the planning permission said they were pleased with the planning application approval.
The new Sainsbury’s store approval is part of a wider regeneration scheme for the town.
