Shropshire residents will be able to celebrate Shrewsbury Town’s promotion to League One as the players are given an open-top bus parade through the streets of the county town on Sunday 6 May 2012.

Celebrations for promotion-winning Shrewsbury Town

The players will leave the Greenhous Meadow at 12.30pm for a tour of the town centre before arriving at the Frankwell Riverside car park in front of the Guildhall in Frankwell for a celebration with fans at 1pm. Players and staff from the club will then attend a civic reception at Shirehall hosted by Shropshire Council and the Mayor of Shrewsbury.

The bus parade will be as follows will depart from the Greenhous Meadow at 12.30pm travelling along to Meole Brace roundabout, Roman Road, Longden Road, Coleham Head, English Bridge, Wyle Cop, High Street, Barker Street, Frankwell roundabout before arriving at Frankwell Riverside car park at around 1pm.

The players and staff will remain on the bus at Guildhall to celebrate with fans for about 15 minutes. The bus will then drive to Shirehall via Smithfield Road, Castle Street, Wyle Cop and Abbey Foregate.

Frankwell Riverside car park (the short stay car park in front of the Guildhall) will be closed to traffic on Sunday morning, but the rest of Frankwell car park will be open as normal. No road closures will be needed during the day.

Leader of Shropshire Council, Keith Barrow, said:

“The players and staff at Shrewsbury Town deserve a huge amount of credit for this success, which is a wonderful boost for Shrewsbury and Shropshire in general, so it’s only right that we recognise that achievement. This isn’t about the council, it’s about celebrating the football club and giving thousands of fans their day of glory as well, so I hope lots of people come out on Sunday to join in the celebrations.”

Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Tony Durnell said:

“I hope as many people as possible turn out to celebrate STFC’s success, we should all be really proud of what they have achieved and the parade gives everyone a chance to feel part of ‘Team Shrewsbury’.”

Shrewsbury Town FC manager, Graham Turner, said:

“It is a great gesture from Shropshire Council and Shrewsbury Town Council to host this civic reception and parade for the club. To be able to go around Shrewsbury and celebrate our wonderful achievement with all our supporters will be a fitting end to a successful season.

“I hope many Shrewsbury Town supporters will come out to see the players, coaches and myself and make this another historic and enjoyable day in the club’s history.”
