Minor injury service gets a new home in Oswestry

The Minor Injury Unit which is currently based at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital in Oswestry is set to move at the beginning on next month.

From 1 November the town’s Minor Injury Unit will get a new home at the recently opened Oswestry Health Centre off Gobowen Road.

The Oswestry unit treats a range of conditions, meaning that people in the town and the surrounding areas don’t have to travel to an A&E service much further afield, and has already proved to be a vital health resource for local people.

Some of the conditions that the MIU service treats, include: cuts and lacerations, soft tissue injuries for example: sprains and bruises, wound infections, head injuries (with no loss of consciousness) and fractures that require plaster only.

“It’s great that the Minor Injury Unit has got a brand new home at the Oswestry Health Centre,” comments Gilly Scott, Clinical Lead for the Minor Injury Unit service and Community Hospitals at Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust. “We hope that the service will continue to be at the heart of the local community, treating people who have minor injuries by experienced Emergency Nurse Practitioners and saving them a journey to another town when they can be treated by experienced staff locally.

“The unit is staffed by Emergency Nurse Practitioners, who are highly skilled nurses with expertise in treating a wide range of injuries. All people attending will get the care and treatment they need, continues Gilly Scott. “If we are not able to treat a specific condition, we will provide advice on the best place to go.”

The Minor Injury Unit at the new Oswestry Health Centre will continue to be open 8.30am until 6pm Monday-Friday, and from 8.30am-1pm on Saturday and Sunday.

The X-ray service will be available from 10am - 2pm Monday to Friday.
