Newport Swimming Pool is set to be expanded with the addition of a health and fitness facility.

Newport Swimming Pool to get Fitness Expansion

Telford & Wrekin Council has appointed the contractor Pryce Builders to deliver the £1m project which will include extending the existing pool building to create a new fitness facility providing up to 50 high tech Cybex workout stations.

The project also includes the refurbishment of the pool changing rooms to provide a modern unisex changing village with improved facilities for families and disabled users.

The project is being funded through a Council ‘Invest to Save’ initiative and now Pryce Builders have been appointed as the contractor work is scheduled to begin next month through to the end of December.

Leisure Services will be contacting users of the pool as well as the parents of those who take swimming lessons to discuss alternative arrangements during the closure.

The new facility is set to open to the public at the beginning of January, just in time to start burning off the excesses of the festive celebrations!

Councillor Liz Clare, cabinet member for Leisure Services and Culture, said: “I’m delighted that we are able to deliver this exciting project for the people of Newport and surrounding rural areas.

“Similar facilities in other parts of the borough have proven to be extremely popular and have encouraged more people to take regular exercise.

“I am particularly pleased as the project is a good example of how the council can improve its services for the community and at the same time generate income as apposed to making cuts.”
