An elderly couple who died when their car left the road and hit a tree near Alveley at the weekend, were today named by police.

The couple were named as Geoffrey Colin Venn and his wife Gillian Elizabeth Venn, both aged 70, from Sharnbrook, Bedford.

The collision happened on the A442 Bridgnorth to Kidderminster road near Alveley shortly after 5pm on Sunday. Mr Venn died at the scene and his wife, who was driving, died in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham on Monday.

Mr and Mrs Venn were travelling in their silver Toyota Rav 4 towards Bridgnorth when it veered across the road into a tree. No other vehicle is thought to have been involved.

Post mortems have been carried out and Shropshire coroner Mr John Ellery is expected to open an inquest tomorrow.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing and police have renewed the appeal for witnesses who saw the actual collision or the vehicle being driven immediately beforehand.

Any information which might assist the investigation should be passed to Shrewsbury or Bridgnorth police stations by calling 101 or 0300 333 3000.
