The recently divorced 41-year-old MP, who has a daughter, is reported to have received a standing ovation when he told around 30 members of the Shrewsbury Conservative Association.

Speaking after the meeting Shrewsbury Tory chairman Robert Osborne, said:

“It was a very brave thing for Daniel to do and he did it with great aplomb.

“He received huge support from members of the association and there was never a shadow of doubt that he would.

“He made the announcement at the end of the meeting and we moved on straight away.”

Earlier this year Mr Kawczynski voted in favour of same sex marriage.

In an open letter written at the time of the vote Mr Kawczynski, said:

“I understand and fully appreciate that there may be many who do not share in my views. My decision however is one of principle which

"I have come to after a long period of reflection – I do not believe same sex marriage will undermine the union of a man and a woman.”

Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski was joined by Telford’s Labour MP David Wright in supporting the Bill, whilst other Shropshire Conservatives – Owen Paterson, Mark Pritchard and Philip Dunne voted against.
