Shrewsbury prison tour tickets get snapped up
Tickets made available for tours of the recently closed Shrewsbury prison were snapped up at the weekend within 24hrs of being made available.

All free tickets for HMP Shrewsbury open days taking place on 14 and 15 September have been allocated.
The 136 year old Shropshire prison was one of seven shut by the Ministry of Justice earlier this year to cut costs. Since its closure, many residents have expressed an interest in having the opportunity to look around the iconic building before another use is found for it.
The open days will be carried out in association with Heritage Open Days, a charitable organisation aligned with the National Trust that works with organisations to celebrate England’s architecture and culture by offering free access to places that are usually closed to the public.
Daniel Kawczynski said:
“Ticket availability was advertised on Heritage Open Days website at the weekend and within 24 hours all of the allotted free tickets had gone.
“Ever since the announcement that HMP Shrewsbury was to close, I have been in discussions with the Ministry of Justice to ensure that before the building is put to another use, officials would permit the opening up of the prison for public tours. I am pleased that local residents will now be able to visit this iconic building, that is very much a part of Shrewsbury’s history.”
