Extra police on duty for today's Shrewsbury v Walsall match
Extra police will be on duty for today’s local derby football match between Shrewsbury and Walsall.

The extra officers will be in Shrewsbury following the disorder which marred last season’s fixture which resulted in more than 20 men being arrested. Most pleaded guilty to violent disorder and were sentenced at Shrewsbury Crown Court in October. Seven received prison sentences of up to 18 months along with football banning orders of four to six years.
Chief Inspector Paul Moxley, in charge of policing today’s match, said:
“We are obviously aware of the trouble that broke out before the corresponding fixture last year and appreciate the concern it raised. “We have taken the necessary steps to police the town and the ground surrounds and at this stage we are not anticipating that there will be a repeat of the disorder which occurred before last year’s game. “However, extra officers will be on duty and there will be an enhanced presence to deal with any incidents.”
Chief Inspector Moxley said there would be a heightened police presence in the town centre to ensure Christmas shoppers could go about their business without interference. West Midlands Police is also sending a small number of officers to assist the policing operation.
A large crowd of around 7,000 is expected for the League One match including about 1,000 Walsall fans.
Today’s game has been brought forward to 1pm to cutback on the time for drinking beforehand.
